Hi, My name is Rich and welcome to Mountain Strength CrossFit!
I spend my day helping people get fit, get stronger and achieve their athletic goals. I love helping people achieve the things they thought were impossible only minutes before. A heavy back squat, a faster mile, or more confidence in themselves.
My philosophy of fitness and training came from my experiences with a few sources.
Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu - Since June of 1999 I have studied at the Boston Martial Arts Center
Mountain Strength is named after my experiences in and around my training that I received here. Specifically my very challenging Black belt test and my research into Shinden Fudo Ryu and Shugendo.
CrossFit - CrossFit.com and CrossFit Boston - Since June 2007 I have almost exclusively used the methods I learned through CrossFit to train myself and my clients/athletes. I originally started using CrossFit to help me develop more power in my body for my martial arts training. The challenge of the workouts and the community were top notch at CrossFit Boston. My power did increase as did my stamina.
The combination of martial arts training and CrossFit changed the direction of my life.
I am now making this change available to all who seek it.

Dan Torgersen: Coach

I have been involved in athletics from as early as I can remember: as a kid I was happiest playing sports. In high school I decided to focus on lacrosse and was fortunate enough to be a member of the high school state championship team in 1998 and 1999. I was honored to be an All American midfielder and the Connecticut player of the year my senior year. I followed up high school with four years of Division I lacrosse for Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.
After some time traveling around Australia, New Zealand and Fiji working odd jobs, diving and backpacking, I decided to returned to New York City metro area. After a short career in finance I happily transitioned to my current career in Internet Advertising. It was not long after my career change that I was introduced to CrossFit through a new co-worker. Having always enjoyed working out and being physically fit, CrossFit presented a welcome challenge. The famous WOD "FRAN" showed up on the main site and I was properly introduced to high intensity, functional movement. It was 2007 and I have not looked back.
Since that first Fran I went out to learn as much as I could about fitness, nutrition, and the CrossFit universe. I progressed from doing handstand pushups against doors in the globo gym and leaving sweat angels next to the treadmills, to moving to Arlington, MA and signing up at CrossFit Boston. At CFB I trained under some of the best coaches in all of CrossFit. Neal Thompson (owner of CFB), EC Synkowski (HQ trainer), Jon Gilson (HQ trainer and owner of Again Faster), James Hobart (HQ trainer and two time CrossFit Games competitor).
In 2009 I competed and finished in the top 20 of the Northeast Regional Qualifier for the Games. Shortly after competing I completed my Level I Certification and began to build experience coaching and programing for friends and family. I remain devoted to improving lives through fitness and I believe that CrossFit is fantastic tool for creating happiness and well-being. When I am not thinking, talking, doing, or coaching CrossFit, I can be found enjoying the company of my beautiful wife Lindsay, my dog Gulliver, my long time best friends and my large family (including 24 nieces & nephews). Something interesting about me is that I am a Level II certified pumpkin chunker and an amateur scrap-booker.
